introduction
Yes, as far as surf goes on tybee, it
pretty much sucks. But every now and
then, on those unpredictable freak
swells- when most of us are at woork
or school or have something
important to tend to- it can actually
get pretty amazing, and if it isn't
perfect, a lot of times its still good or
rideable. THE BEACH IS ALWAYS
SUBJECT TO CHANGE! (click spot
name for a picture)
"The Pier"-The Pier, located just at
the tip of 16th Street, is perhaps one
of the most common and crowded
spots on Tybee. With it being in the
most commercialized part of Tybee,
tourists and swimmers can be an
annoyance.
For surfing the pier is usually best at
about 2 hours before high tide and
an 1 hour afterwards. But on
occasion and assisted with some
good size swell, it can break
anywhere from about 2 hours after
low tide to about 2 hours before the
next low.
For skimming the pier is usually best
at mid-low tide because thats usually
the only time it breaks close enough
to hit.
"South Jetty"- The south jetty
located
just south of the pier is a sandbar
break that usually is better on smaller
days. On bigger days it usually gets
all messed up and the current gets
very difficult to paddle against.
"4th-9th Street"- 9th Street is a
skim spot that breaks mainly at
high tide. It works best during the
winter months. And on the right
swell you can get some pretty
nice shorebreak. When theres a
bigger swell, it gets far out and
unreachable but also surfable. But
usually the pier would be your
best bet for surfing
"North Jetty"- First off id like
to say we tried our best to keep
this spot secret. But when it
comes to it, there are no
SECRET spots at Tybee, Don't
be fooled though, when the swell
is big, most people get suckered
into going to the pier and don't
even bother checking this spot.
But when the swell creeps into
the right path, Tybee can
actually get epic for surfing.
SHHH!!!!!
Now for the North Jetty skimming.
I can tell you right now that i
have never gotten a ride on a
surfboard as long as I've gotten
one here on a skimboard. The
first jetty works best on a lower
mid tide incoming and the
second jetty works when the tide
fills in at the first and your
running space disapears
"the point" and "Condos"-
these two places are pretty much
right next to each other. they are
at the very north end of the
island PAST the jetties where the
inlet meets the ocean. You'll find
the shorebreak as good as it gets
at tybee when hit at the right
time.High tide spot
"North Jetty"
"2nd street"- This is where you'll find the biggest surf on Tybee during those big northeast swells. The form is
usually better here and If you get it around a lower mid tide it will sometimes break on the outside offering longer
rides than at the pier. Also on those very rare strong swells it can break almost all day. The skim here can get good
sometimes but generally only on small days and really high tides.
